Crumb
A documentary film by David Lynch (Blue Velvet)
exploring the mind and life of cartoonist and artist R.
Crumb (Keep on Truckin', Zap Comix, Mr. Natural and Fritz the
Cat).
In this personal documentary Robert Crumb introduces us to
his highly dysfunctional family and relationships. The
origins of his comic art and how family and childhood helped
to contributed to his unusual style. There are points
in this film that would lead you to say that he should not
have allowed this film to be made for our sake. Then there
are keen insights into the resources he used such as the
photo album of street corners, road intersections and the
the jumble of power, phone and other lines strung about as a
visual form of background noise. In the film he shows us
that when drawing his comics, the background clutter that
comes from the photo album, "you can't just make this stuff
up", he says. Crumb makes a few points that are well thought
out in his film. Mainly I found the film both insightful and
interesting. It is a view into the thinking of an icon of
comic art who is as controversial as he is disturbing.
Keep on Trucking Mr. Crumb. (He would have hated me for
writing that ...)
